The Summary page gives you a month-by-month picture of a bank account’s balance, expenses, and income for the year. It’s the place to verify the numbers line up before you generate reports, and it’s also where you set the account’s starting balance for the year.
You can open the Summary two ways:
- From the Entries menu → Summary card. This is the standalone Summary screen.
- As the Summary Report step inside the Entry Workflow. The layout and the numbers are the same; the workflow version is just one step along the way.
Picking what you want to see
At the top of the Summary, pick:
- The business
- The bank account
- The year
Simple-C loads the data for that combination and shows the totals broken down by month (January through December, plus a year Total column). If you change the bank or year, the table refreshes automatically; use the Refresh button to reload the same selection on demand.
What the page shows
The Summary is one wide table with three colored section blocks. Each row is a line item, each column is a month, and the last column is the year total. Row headers stay visible on the left while you scroll sideways.
Balance section
The top block tracks the bank account’s running balance.
- Beginning Balance — your starting balance for the period. Only the January cell is editable (see Editing the January Beginning Balance below). February through December cascade automatically from the prior month’s calculated ending balance, so they’re read-only.
- Income from Account — total bank-deposited income (regular income plus income adjustments) credited to the account.
- Interest Earned — interest credited to the account.
- Withdraw Debits — total expenses paid out of the account (excludes adjustments and cash entries).
- Ending Balance — calculated as: Beginning Balance + Income from Account + Interest Earned − Withdraw Debits. There is no year total for this row because the year-end balance is simply December’s ending balance.
Expenses summary section
- Cash Expenses — total cash expenses entered for the month (Manual Entry cash debits).
- Expenses From Account — total expenses paid from the bank account (the same Withdraw Debits figure from the Balance section).
- Net Expenses — Cash Expenses + Expenses From Account.
Income section
- Total Income — bank-deposited income (Income from Account + Interest Earned).
- Cash Income — cash income entered for the month.
- Income Adjustments — records that appear on the bank statement and should be marked as an adjustment (hover the icon next to the title for the in-app definition).
- Adjustments — amounts that should be deducted from a record on the bank statement (hover the icon next to the title for the in-app definition).
- Interest Earned — interest credited to the account (shown again here as part of income).
- Net Income — the combined total of the income lines above.
Expenses detail tables
Below the income block, the Summary also lists every expense category and uncategorized method with a month-by-month subtotal and a Total Expenses: (categorized) and Total Uncategorized Expenses: row at the bottom of each block. Use these to scan which categories or payment methods are driving the totals.
Editing the January Beginning Balance
Almost every cell on the Summary is read-only — the numbers are calculated from the records you’ve entered elsewhere. The only field you edit on this page is the January Beginning Balance.
- Click the January value in the Beginning Balance row.
- Type the starting balance (up to 10 digits before the decimal and 2 decimals).
- Press Enter (or click out of the field) to save. Press Esc to cancel without saving.
- The page recalculates every month’s Beginning and Ending Balance from your new January value, and the totals update.
If a save is in progress, the editable cell is disabled momentarily until the update finishes.
Where to enter the rest of the data
To add or change the numbers that feed the Summary, go to the source screens:
- Expenses, income, and cash income — enter them in Manual Entry or in the corresponding step of the Entry Workflow (Expenses, Cash Receipt, Income, Cash Income).
- Quick links — when a bank and year are selected, the Summary shows quick links to Expenses (Manual Entry) and Reports so you can jump straight to data entry or to generate a report without re-selecting the bank and year.
Using the Summary to catch errors
The Summary is a great sanity check before generating your reports:
- Compare each month’s Ending Balance with your real bank statement — if they don’t match, you have a missing or duplicated transaction.
- Watch for months with unusually high or low totals; they often point to a misclassified transaction.
- Verify that Cash Income and Cash Expenses match your cash records before closing out the year.
- Skim the Uncategorized Expenses block at the bottom — if those totals are non-zero, head to Uncategorized Expenses to classify them before running financial statements.
